No Torn Jeans in AJC Bose College: Freshers Required to Sign ‘No Torn Jeans on Campus’ Affidavit

A college in Kolkata, Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College, recently sent a message to its undergraduate students. They requested that, before joining the college, students should provide a signed statement, promising not to wear clothing that’s considered inappropriate, such as ripped jeans, while inside the college campus.

The Affidavit Declares “Having been admitted to Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College, I will never enter inside college premises wearing torn/artificially torn jeans or any kind of indecent dresses. I do hereby affirm that I shall wear normal civil dresses during my study period inside the entire college premises.”

The school has also requested the parents of the students to provide a formal commitment on this issue.

The college’s website announcement says that you can only wear formal clothing. It mentions, “The first semester classes will begin on August 7, 2023. Please note that wearing torn jeans is not allowed. You should wear formal attire.”

Last year, AJC Bose College also issued a notice urging students and staff not to wear jeans that are “torn or artificially torn” because they are considered “indecent.”

Principal Purna Chandra Maity stated, “Last year, we gave a similar notice to our students. However, even after the notice, some students still wore torn jeans when coming to the college. We’d prefer our students not to dress this way on campus. I won’t allow anyone to wear such inappropriate clothing at the college. That’s why, to take a firm stance, this year we’ve decided to issue the same advisory to incoming students. Furthermore, they’ll need to provide a written commitment not to wear such attire before enrolling. They’re free to dress as they like outside the college premises.”

Maity explained that students and their parents must first sign the affidavit before they can access the payment portal to pay the admission fees.

“Torn clothes do not fit the decorum of an educational institute. Students must follow the rules of the college and know how to dress appropriately to a formal institute,” Maity stated.

Many students have voiced their opposition to this change, expressing concerns that it limits their freedom of expression.
